Dyson, Mazda, and Ecolab are among the growing number of companies suspending or pulling ads from Twitter due to the social media platform’s infestation of pedophiles.
A Reuters investigation found that Twitter is displaying these and other companies’ ads alongside tweets promoting or soliciting child sex abuse materials, prompting backlash from some of them.
Companies like Comcast, NBCUniversal, Coca-Cola, and Disney remain on Twitter because these companies apparently support the sexual exploitation of children. But Dyson, Mazda, and Ecolab do not.
The cybersecurity group Ghost Data presented Reuters with side-by-side imagery depicting the ads on child sex tweets. The group also identified more than 500 Twitter accounts that openly solicit or share child sex abuse material across the platform.
Back in the summer of 2021, we published our own report on how Twitter is a haven for pedophiles, while Facebook is a known hub for sex trafficking, including that of children.
“Some of tweets include key words related to ‘rape’ and ‘teens,’ and appeared alongside promoted tweets from corporate advertisers,” Reuters reported, noting that Twitter failed to remove about 70 percent of these offending tweets upon being notified.
“In one example, a promoted tweet for shoe and accessories brand Cole Haan appeared next to a tweet in which a user said they were ‘trading teen / child’ content.”
In response to the news, Cole Haan brand president David Maddocks said the company is “horrified” at the revelation.
“Either Twitter is going to fix this, or we’ll fix it by any means we can, which includes not buying Twitter ads,” Maddocks told Reuters.
Andrew Stroppa, the founder of Ghost Data, tweeted that Twitter clearly “has a severe problem with child pornography.” He further indicated that a full public release of his company’s report on the matter will be delayed because this is “a sensitive topic.”
Stroppa has been involved with other projects on Twitter, including battling the so-called “bots” that billionaire Elon Musk claims plague the social media platform.
Human Events contributor Eliza Bleu, a surviving victim of human trafficking,” says she hopes to shine a really bright light on Twitter’s pedophilia problem in the hopes that something will be done to fix it.
“Twitter could have dealt with their child sexual abuse material problem at scale long ago,” Bleu says. “Instead, they chose to put the censorship of words over removing human rights violations committed against children. The initial child sexual abuse is not Twitter’s fault. The failure to remove it at scale and in a timely fashion is.”
“If advertisers truly care about vulnerable populations, they will remove their advertisements from Twitter at once. It’s time to hit Twitter where it hurts. This is the only language abusers understand.”
Bleu went on to reveal that she is standing by “two minor survivors” of child sex trafficking who are suing Twitter for facilitating their abduction and abuse. Bleu says she “applaud[s] them for their bravery.”
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has stepped in on a few occasions to address Twitter’s pedophile problem. The federal agency removed images and videos of a teenage sex trafficking victim after Twitter refused to do the job itself, claiming the images and video do not “violate policies.”
A minor male on Twitter was reportedly lured into sharing sexually explicit images of himself with what he believed was a teenage girl. Instead, it was pedophile pervert Twitter users who then proceeded to blackmail the boy into sending more explicit videos of himself and another child.
